Cool Tools for Bookworms

Are you a bibliophile, a bookworm? Why don’t you try organizing your books and your reading with some free online tools? With the help of LibraryThing, GoodReads, Shelfari or even “My Library” on Google Books, you can catalog your books, keep track of what you’ve read or what you want to read, as well as read reviews and get recommendations.

Want to join an online book club, send a message to an author? Or, when you love a book and want to find out what to read next? Try GoodReads. Want to catalog your books? Try LibraryThing. Spend a lot of time on Google? Try “MyLibrary” on Google Books. The possibilities are endless.

My personal favorite is goodreads, but they all have great features and are tons of fun for those who love to read!

Messy Room

Whosever room this is should be ashamed!
His underwear is hanging on the lamp.
His raincoat is there in the overstuffed chair,
And the chair is becoming quite mucky and damp.
His workbooks wedged in the window,
His sweater's been thrown on the floor.
His scarf and one ski are beneath the TV,
And his pants have been carelessly hung on the door.
His books are all jammed in the closes,
His vest have been left in the hall.
A lizard named Ed is asleep in his bed,
And his smelly old sock has been stuck to the wall.
Whosever room this is should be ashamed!
Donald or Robert or Willie or-
Huh? You say it's mine? Oh dear,
I knew it looked familiar!

by Shel Silverstein

Class Trip

When Sinbad sailed the seven seas,
his cheeks were red and ruddy.
But when Sue brought home seven C's,
Mom kept her home to study.
Th moral of this story is:
Folks cheer for exploration.
But you're not going anywhere
without an education

National Poetry Month

April is National Poetry Month!

What is National Poetry Month? National Poetry Month is a month-long, national celebration of poetry established by the Academy of American Poets. The concept is to widen the attention of individuals and the media—to the art of poetry, to living poets, to our complex poetic heritage, and to poetry books and journals of wide aesthetic range and concern. We hope to increase the visibility and availability of poetry in popular culture while acknowledging and celebrating poetry’s ability to sustain itself in the many places where it is practiced and appreciated.

The library has a great collection of poetry on display, so stop in and check something out.

Dirty Little Secrets
by C.J. Omololu
Call # Young Adult Omololu
212 pages

Everyone has secrets. Some are just bigger and dirtier than others.

For sixteen years, Lucy has kept her mother's hoarding a secret. She's had to -- nobody would understand the stacks of newspapers and mounds of garbage so high they touch the ceiling and the rotting smell that she's always worried would follow her out the house. After years of keeping people at a distance, she finally has a best friend and maybe even a boyfriend if she can play it right. As long as she can make them think she's normal.

When Lucy arrives home from a sleepover to find her mother dead under a stack of National Geographics, she starts to dial 911 in a panic, but pauses before she can connect. She barely notices the filth and trash anymore, but she knows the paramedics will. First the fire trucks, and then news cameras that will surely follow. No longer will they be remembered as the nice oncology nurse with the lovely children -- they'll turn into that garbage-hoarding freak family on Collier Avenue.

With a normal life finally within reach, Lucy has only minutes to make a critical decision. How far will she go to keep the family secrets safe?
