Manga Book Club!

We're starting a Manga Book Club at the library, beginning in January. At our monthly meetings, we'll chat about the book we read, do some fun activities, and eat some yummy snacks. Check back here for more information about what the book will be and how to get a copy. Our first meeting will be on Wednesday, January 27 at 3:00 pm! As always, if you have any questions, be sure and ask Jess!

We Moved!

If you've been in the library at all in the last month, you've probably noticed some major changes to the YA section--most visibly, the location! No longer hidden away in the back corner of the library, the teen books are up front, in the left corner just behind the circulation desk. All of the computers right near that area are "All Use" meaning teens can use them! Some major improvements, to be sure, considering we have a lot more space for graphic novels and new books!

Coming soon: a YA music section! Did you know we purchase music every month? Right now it's all in one place, but CDs for teens will eventually be moved over to the YA section for easy access.
If you're having trouble finding something you know should be there, make sure you ask Jess or ask at the desk for help! It's probably just hiding in a new spot.

Fall Programming

Now that we're well into October, it's safe to say that fall is officially here, and that means Fall Programming! You'll find all the old favorites are back, so check out the dates and times and come on over to the library after school.

Rec Room (2:45-4 pm every other Monday)
  • That's right--there's pool, ping-pong, basketball, foosball, and snacks for sale (cheap!). Come down to the Rec Room to play games or just hang out with friends. For grades 6-9 only, please.

Teen Crafts (2:45-4 pm, Wednesdays October 14, November 4, and December 2)

  • Beading, jewelry-making, even duct tape crafts! Bring your creativity and come hang out in the newly moved and re-designed teen space. No need to have any know-how; we'll teach you what you need to know. For grades 6 and up.

Teen Gaming (2:45-4 pm, Wednesday, October 27, and Tuesdays November 10 and December 15)

  • We have a Wii and a PlayStation, tons of games, and new ones on the way. Bring your friends to challenge to a game, or just hang out and play board games. For grades 6-9 only, please.

Great news! There's no need to register for any of these programs, just show up! If you want some more info, you can click here or visit the library's website. As always, contact Jess with any questions or comments.

Limo Ride and Trip to Kennywood?!

CONGRATULATIONS to all of the lucky Teen Summer Reading prize-winners! If you've won, you'll know, as phone calls were made on Friday, August 7.

Bummed out that you didn't win? Not all the prizes have been handed out. There's still the awesome limo ride and 6 tickets to Kennywood Park! This is a county-wide prize, so the way to win is to fill out the Summer Reading survey found here. There's also a link on the righthand side of the blog. Your feedback is valuable as is the prize you could win just for taking a couple of minutes to give us a piece of your mind!
Questions? As always, you can email or call me (see the sidebar for that info), or stop by the library!

And the winner is...

We're nearing the time to pull our winners for the Teen Summer Reading prizes! This is the last week that you'll have to drop your entry forms in the prize boxes. I'll be pulling winners on Friday, August 7 after the library closes--all entry forms must be in by 5:00 pm (when the library closes) to be counted. Prizes will be available for pick up starting Saturday, August 8 at 10 am (when the library opens). Any questions? Call the library at (412) 882-5694, or email me (Jess) at hoptayj@einetwork.net. Good luck!

Teen End of Summer Reading Party!

Join us outside the Rec Room (in the back of the library) for a performance by local band Cardboard Roosevelt (visit their MySpace!) this Saturday, August 1. The show starts at 6, and will be accompanied by snacks & drinks and hang out time in the Rec Room. It's going to be an awesome way to enjoy the last bits of summer (and celebrate the end of Summer Reading), so make sure you stop by!

Wii Gaming Tournament

Head down to the library Friday night, July 24 from 7 to 8:30 pm for some intense Wii challenging! We'll have two Wiis, three possible Wii games to go head-to-head against your friends (Guitar Hero, MarioKart, and Wii Sports), and loads of board games for those who just want to come, hang out, and watch. The winner will take home the coveted GameStop gift card, along with respect and bragging rights. It's single elimination, so bring your A-game. Don't forget to register by calling the library at (412) 882-5694, clicking here, or emailing Jess (hoptayj@einetwork.net).

Make-Your-Own Mini-Scrapbooks!

There's still time to sign up for our Make-Your-Own Mini-Scrapbooks program! On Wednesday, July 1, scrapbooking expert Amy Hoptay will be teaching us how to make our very own squashbooks. All you need to do is register and bring along 5-10 photos that you want to see in a scrapbook. To register, click here, call the library at (412) 882-5694, stop by, or drop Jess an email. This one's for all teens entering grades 6-12.

There's so much to look forward to, friends. So BE EXCITED!

May Day! May Day!

Now that April's over, we're moving on to the month of May. Because I'll be doing a lot of school visits for Summer Reading, our activities have slowed down to just the regular stand-by: The Rec Room! It's still open from 3-4:30 pm every Monday that school is in session, so for this month, that means:

  • May 4

  • May 11

  • May 18

  • NOT OPEN: May 25 due to the library's observance of Memorial Day

The very last Rec Room for the summer will be Monday, June 1, and it's worth your while to stop by because there may be some awesome freebees!

Keep your eyes out for the Summer Reading Flyer, which will have all the programs for teens entering grades 6-12. It'll be posted to this blog very soon!

What's Happening in April?

Teen Rec Room -- As always, you can come hang out Mondays from 3-4:30 after school in the Rec Room. There are snacks for sale (cheap!), plus there's the pool table, basketball, ping pong, air hockey, and foosball! *Note: We'll be closed April 13 due to the Brentwood Schools being closed.
